Circular cabin design for the city of Amsterdam

Cabin Dragonfly

The Amsterdam municipal campsite ‘Camping Vliegenbos’, located in a lush forest near the city centre, is making a transition to eco-camping. Object Studio realised a re-design, refurbishment and upgrade of the 15 year old Finnish style cabins, an transformed them to modern versions.

They will accomodate 2-6 people for at least another 15 years. The original cabins were still of high quality, and it was hard to believe they were that old. 100% of the original materials could be re-used and integrated in the update.

Wood-based insulation, new facade-cladding, plant-based flooring, lineseed oil based wallpaint and custom made furniture are added to the material set, of whicht the facade cladding is harvested from the forest itself. Original shapes are still visible inside to show what is old and new, and inspire the, mostly young, visitors to start circular material thinking.

To improve the recreational quality, two of the original cabins are mirrored and connected. An attachment is added to create a sanitary room and an extra bed: the ‘Skybed’, which has completely transparent roof that offers a unique free view into the star filled sky.

The interior is flexible to be able to accomodate 2, 4 or 6 people, without giving them the feeling they are staying in a cabin that’s designed for a different number of people.

6 of the new cabins will be part of the eco-cabin village.
